Ultrasound Technician

So you’re intrigued by the ultrasound technician occupation, but you don’t really know much about it, or what it takes to get into the field. Here’s everything you will need to know about getting into a rewarding career as an ultrasound technician.

What is an ultrasound technician? Also called diagnostic medical sonographers, ultrasound technicians use special imaging equipment that directs sound waves into a patient’s body (in a procedure commonly known as an ultrasound, sonogram or echocardiogram) to assess and document various medical conditions.

Yes, as an ultrasound tech you could ultimately be the person who gives someone their first glimpse of their new baby girl or boy. That’s some pretty powerful stuff – but beyond that, ultrasound technicians (or diagnostic medical sonographers) are trained to diagnose internal medical conditions. They are also well-versed in other facets of the medical profession. The human body is complex, and as such, sonographers can specialize in different parts of the body, including musculoskeletal, abdominal, gynecological and breast.

Now you know what an ultrasound technician does, but what do you need to do to get into this field? Most programs for this occupation are designed for individuals who already possess a bachelor’s degree to receive the technical skills and training needed to excel in the diagnostic medical sonography program. Colleges, like American Institute, use a combination of hands-on lab work with online theory classes to give you the flexibility you need for your busy schedule.

The ARDMS certification is required to become an ultrasound technician. During the diagnostic medical sonography program, you are eligible to sit for the SPI exam (Sonography Principles and Instrumentation) which is half of the ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) exam. Graduates will be prepared to sit for the Abdomen (AB) and/or Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) specialty examinations through the ARDMS.

Already have a bachelor degree? Take the next steps to getting a rewarding education that you will actually enjoy – learn about the marvels of the human body, further your education and get certified in the medical field, all while helping others experience a deeper understanding of their own body. Become a certified ultrasound technician and join a profession where you never stop learning and growing in the ever-expanding field of medicine.
