How to become a cosmetologist

The first step is to complete a cosmetology training program. American Institute offers a well-rounded cosmetology program at our Margate, FL campus. Students complete coursework in all facets of hairstyling including color, cut and chemical services, as well as courses in skin care and nail technology. Our program prepares students to sit for the examination in Florida, which requires passing two separate written exams: written theory and written clinical. (Click here for Florida cosmetology license requirements.)

American Institute offers Career Services to every student that graduates. As a student at American Institute, you will meet the Career Services team at your campus at your Orientation. During your training with American Institute, Career Services teaches a series of seminars including resume writing and interviewing skills. And, after graduation, Career Services helps each student in your job search for your new career. Our team has excellent relationships with potential employers, helping you build your network in your new field from the moment you graduate.

Where do cosmetologists work?

A cosmetologist, barber or hair stylist usually begins their career working in a salon or shop. Some stylists may work for spas and resorts. After gaining more experience, there may be an opportunity to move into management roles. Some make the choice to open their own business, while others may choose to become instructors. Continuing education is vital for stylists to keep up on certain trends. In fact, Florida law requires Cosmetologists to complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years in order to renew their license.
